FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 1 Million Voices For Inclusion, a network of advocates for transgender people, will hold a peaceful protest at the Victoria Conference Centre on Saturday June 22 at 9am, to counter the annual We Unify conference and its speaker lineup of notorious transphobes.

WHERE: Victoria Conference Centre, 720 Douglas St, Victoria, BC V8W 3M7
WHEN: Saturday, June 22, 2024 9am
WHY: We allies of queer & transgender people shall stand our ground until We Unify is gone

We Unify’s Reclaiming Canada conference features a lineup of concerning speakers having been flagged for hate speech against the LGBTQ community. Among them are:

  • Lauren Southern, a provocateur banned from multiple countries altogether;
  • Artur Pawlowski, notorious for his opposition to a ban on conversion therapy for homosexuals and protesting a rainbow crosswalk;
  • John Carpay, who compared pride flags to swastikas;
  • Zuby, a vlogger known for performing a stunt mocking transgender people and his professed support of transphobe J.K. Rowling; and
  • Drea Humphrey of RebelNews who makes a living glorifying their likes.
  • Lauren Chen, who recently made headlines accusing Biden of “minimizing” Easter Sunday by having it collide with the transgender day of visibility in 2024, has since been taken off the list.

1 Million Voices For Inclusion recently retaliated by launching a letter campaign calling upon the Victoria Conference Centre to deny We Unify its venue, and even addressed the city council on June 13.

The City of Victoria issued a statement to the effect that the Victoria Conference Centre is a public facility available to everyone, invoking the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms in its rationale.

This stance contrasts with its Declaration of Ongoing Solidarity with Gender-Diverse Residents of Victoria, released last October, in which it “condemns any and all anti-SOGI mobilizations that seek to undermine the rights and dignity of gender-diverse individuals and their families within our city” and “calls upon community leaders to denounce attacks on transgender and gender-diverse individuals.”

We have called out to allies near and far to mobilize against this brazen display of homophobia and transphobia in the most gender-diverse city in Canada during Pride month and Indigenous Heritage month. Given the near spontaneous turnout to counter the 1 Million March For Children last September, we are confident we can rally several hundreds on that day.

We are assembling our own speaker lineup to address the crowd at the demonstration, Micah (MJ) Muller (They/them) of the Pride Collective at the University of Victoria among them.
